Q&A

What inspired you to become a physician?

I was a sick kid with allergies and respiratory infections and many trips to the pediatrician and allergist. I remember writing the one female pediatrician who practiced in Northern Maine when I was 8 years old, asking what was necessary for me to do to become a doctor. She wrote me back! Her words of encouragement have inspired me all these years. After my father succumbed to a sudden cardiac death at the age of 48 (I was 15), the idea of helping others by changing their lifestyles and, hence, preventing chronic diseases became a lifelong passion of mine.

Why did you come to WorldClinic?

I have known the CEO of this great company for the better part of two decades and have watched as he and his employees have grown the company into a world-renowned concierge healthcare entity. It has been fun to watch and now it is doubly fun to be a part of it! What attracted me to this job is that I will continue to have ongoing relationships with our patients, almost like being a primary care clinician, which I’ve been doing for the last 25 years for the Veterans Administration sector of healthcare, and I loved doing this.

What do you find most rewarding about being a physician?

I have always thought it was an honor and a privilege to care for others’ health. Patients entrust me with the most personal aspects of their lives, and I have never taken that lightly. Being able to use all the skills I’ve gleaned through the years to figure out what is going on with a patient and then being with that patient who may be facing a very challenging diagnosis, to getting through it to its resolution or helping the patient manage a chronic condition is very gratifying to me.

What motivates you to do your best at work every day?

What motivates me is that I love what I do every day. I enjoy the thrill of meeting people, taking their history and physical exam, trying to figure out what is going on with them, and then helping them feel better. Each person is like a science project, and I always loved doing those along the way. Medicine is constantly changing; keeping up with it, teaching others, learning something new every day, and then being the best advocate of healthcare, I can be to help convince others to take the best care of themselves is just the best job there is, especially when they succeed!
